Russian embassy in Damascus hit by mortar fire

Russia says its consulate in the Syrian capital has been hit by mortar fire.

The Foreign Ministry said in an announcement Wednesday that a mortar round arrived in the international safe haven yard without detonating, and another fell in the region. The service says sappers have been brought into expel the gadget.

Russian authorities faulted the assault for “fanatics” restricted to a quiet settlement of Syria’s contention.

Russia is a key partner of Syrian President Bashar Assad, who has been doing combating a rebel against his family’s four-decade lead since 2011.
